FAQ
1. What is Adi Kailash and why is it important?
Adi Kailash, also called Chhota Kailash, is a sacred mountain in Uttarakhand, near the Indo-Tibet border. It’s believed to be the earthly replica of Mount Kailash in Tibet and holds deep spiritual significance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Bon religion.
2. What is the best time to visit Adi Kailash?
May to June and September to October are considered the best months. Monsoon (July–August) is usually avoided due to landslides and bad road conditions.
3. How difficult is the yatra?
It’s a moderate to difficult journey due to high altitude (up to ~15,500 ft) and rough terrain. While much of it is done by vehicle, some sections involve short treks or pony rides.
4. Do I need to be physically fit?
Yes — good health and reasonable fitness are essential. Seniors above ~60 are usually asked for a medical certificate.
5. Is there any permit required?
Yes, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory since it’s near the India-China border. Tour operators usually arrange this; you’ll need ID proof, photos, and sometimes a medical certificate.
6. What kind of accommodation is provided?
Basic accommodation — mostly guesthouses, homestays, dhabas, or tents. Facilities are simple, often with shared bathrooms and limited electricity.
7. What about food on the yatra?
Vegetarian meals are provided, usually simple Indian food (dal, rice, roti, sabzi). Carrying dry snacks, nuts, and energy bars is advised.
8. How do we travel — is it all trekking?
Most of the route is covered by vehicle (SUV, tempo traveler, or similar). There are short walks, and in some cases, you can hire a pony.
9. Is altitude sickness a risk?
Yes, due to the high elevation. Acclimatization days are usually included in the itinerary. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and notify guides if you feel unwell.
10. What should I pack?
- Warm clothes (layering recommended)
- Good trekking shoes
- Rain jacket/poncho
- Medicines (personal + altitude sickness)
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, cap
- Torchlight, power bank, water bottle
- ID documents, permits, cash (ATMs are scarce)
11. Is there mobile network connectivity?
Limited. BSNL works in some villages, but expect long stretches without signal.
12. Are children allowed?
Most operators advise against bringing children under 10–12 years due to the altitude and harsh conditions.
13. Can the itinerary change midway?
Yes — weather, landslides, or political restrictions can force changes. Always have a flexible mindset.
