Udaipur – Lake city of India

Udaipur is one of the very few seductive cities in India. It is situated in Rajasthan amidst the splendid Aravalli Ranges. It is referred to as the “City of Lakes” or as the “Venice of the East” and known internationally as the “Most romantic city of India”. Udaipur is the perfect exemplar of Rajput passion and dreaming with beautiful palaces, Havelis, temples, gardens and other architectures throughout the city.

This lovely piece of land is surrounded by azure water lakes and other wonderful sights which have remained the motivation of many painters, poets, and writers. This city is like a vision in white and is soaked with the aroma of romance and beauty everywhere.

It is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in India. Tourists from all around the world fly to Udaipur to experience the fairy-tale-like palaces, beautiful lakes, lovely culture, and other wonders. Udaipur was formerly known as Mewar before Maharaja Udai Singh founded the stone to this city in 1559.

Lakes are the inseparable part of the quixotic setting of Udaipur. The city is famous for its picturesque Lakes and watercourses. The wonderful view and boat-rides simply leave a soothing and refreshing impact on the visitors.

Visiting Places in Udaipur

Pichola Lake

This one is a picture-perfect Lake located in the heart of Udaipur. It is one of the biggest and oldest lakes in the city. This Lake was built by Pichhu Banjara in the year 1362 during the rule of Maharana Lakha.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Situated beside the entrance to the Moti Magri Hill, Fateh Sagar Lake is located to the north of Lake Pichola. It was built by Maharana Jai Singh in the year 1678. But it was named after Maharana Fateh Singh who made some additions to beautify it.

Jaisamand Lake

This Lake is known to be the second largest lake in entire Asia that has been made artificially. It is situated at a distance of 48 km from Udaipur city. This Lake was also built by Maharana Jai Singh in the year 1685.

Udai Sagar Lake

This Lake is situated at a distance of 13 km to the east of Udaipur city. This beautiful lake was built by Maharana Udai Singh around the 1560s.

Besides these Lakes, there are a few other wonderful lakes and ponds (Talabs) such as the Rajsamand Lake, Swaroop Sagar Talab, Doodh Talai, Jiyan Sagar Talab which constantly adds to the beauty of the city.

The charming view of the lakes, the palaces, and forts, the crafted gardens are splendid examples of the famous Mewar dynasty who had ruled the place for ages.

The City Palace

This one is the biggest palace complex in the state of Rajasthan and is an artistic mixture of Medieval, Chinese, and European architecture. The City Palace is located on the banks of the famous Pichola Lake. The Palace was built by Maharana Udai Singh, but eventually, the succeeding Maharanas added more palaces and structures to the original complex resulting in a surprisingly charismatic outcome.

The Lake Palace

As the name itself suggests, the Lake Palace was built in the middle of the famous Pichola Lake. Maharana Jagat Singh built it in 1743. Earlier, it was meant to be a summer palace, but now it has been converted into a five star palace hotel. Shining with its white marble, the Lake Palace is one of the most exquisite palaces in the world. The beautiful fountains and gardens around the palace make it much more impressive. 

How to reach Udaipur

Udaipur can be reached easily by air, trains or roads. The nearest airport Mahrarana Pratap Airport is located 22 km from Udaipur and is connected from all major cities in India.

The railways are also connected to all major stations.

Those who prefer to travel by roadways can choose between public bus services and Super deluxe buses from Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad.
